What exactly is the Moby Tablet?
The Moby is a Marvell reference design that provides affordable, fully-functional and connected tablets available to the world.
We're initially focusing on education but will be focusing also on healthcare in the very near future.
For education, the Moby Tablet provides new learning opportunities for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds.
For healthcare, Moby Tablet improves communication and allows real-time information exchange between providers and patients.
The Moby is a Marvell reference design to make affordable, fully-functional, connected tablets available to the world.
We're initially focusing on two areas: Education and Healthcare
For education, the Moby Tablet will provide new learning opportunities for children of all socioeconomic backgrounds, using advanced technology.
For healthcare, the Moby will change the way providers and patients get information and communicate, using tablets to make lives easier.
Marvell has not issued a specific release to market date – however, our plans are to make it available in the Fall timeframe this year.
Marvell is collaborating with key partner OEMs and ODMs to bring a "best-of-breed" approach to make the Moby Tablet all it can be. Marvell is providing its advanced, industry-leading System-on-Chip to power the Moby Tablet, for ultimate performance and scalability.
The tablets will be made available through our OEM manufacturers and their various distribution and sales channels. Marvell is not selling tablet devices direct to consumers.

The Moby Tablet is based on Marvell's high-performance, highly scalable and low-power Marvell® ARMADA™ 610 application processor. Marvell is also making available a reference design for developing and testing applications.
The Marvell ARMADA 610 features gigahertz processor speed, 1080p full-HD encode and decode, intelligent power management, power-efficient Marvell 802.11n Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM/GPS connectivity, high performance 3D graphics capability and support for multiple software standards including full Adobe Flash, Android™, Windows Mobile and Ubuntu. The ultra-low power Moby Tablet is designed for long battery life.

There is a Marvell reference design based on the ARMADA 600 series of application processors. A Moby tablet's feature-set can look very much like this – except it will be outfitted with applications and programs for the education and medical market.

• Moby ED provides content that simply can't be presented in a textbook – such as demonstrative videos, educational podcasts, clickable maps that reveal more information, and collaborative, interschool engagements and learning.
• With the roughly $500 billion spent on education in the U.S., it's critical now to begin balancing the rising cost of classroom learning tools (30 percent increases each year), and the growing digital divide among students. Providing access to $99 tablets can spark this movement.
• Greener Learning. Moby ED reduces the need to buy and carry heavy textbooks, creating instant paper cost savings and lighter school bags. A tablet that can hold a year's worth of books, yet weigh less than half an average textbook will reduce the weight of cumbersome school bags that can lead to neck and shoulder injuries.
Sounding the Bell
To support our campaign for improved classroom technology—including Plug® Servers for the classroom—Marvell has launched its Mobylize! campaign. The Mobylize campaign is an ambitious plan to galvanize educators, parents, and computer and software industry leaders to collaborate to make America's classrooms the best technology-equipped in the world.
Now, Marvell has joined forces with One Laptop per Child to accelerate a global classroom technology revolution. A longtime supporter of OLPC, Marvell is supplying the global computer project with the Moby reference platform for adaptation for the new OLPC XO 3.0 Tablet.

One Laptop per Child and Marvell Join Forces to Redefine Tablet Computing for Students Around the World
Marvell and OLPC Empower Education Industry to Revolutionize the Classroom Experience through Advanced, Affordably-Priced Tablets
Cambridge, Mass. and Santa Clara, Calif. (May 27, 2010) One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a global organization whose mission is to help provide every child in the world access to a modern education, and Marvell, a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, have agreed to jointly develop a family of next-generation OLPC XO tablet computers based on the Marvell® Moby reference design. This new partnership will provide designs and technologies to enable a range of new educational tablets, delivered by OLPC and other education industry leaders, aimed at schools in both the U.S. and developing markets. Marvell is also announcing today it has launched Mobylize, a campaign aimed at improving technology adoption in America's classrooms.
The new family of XO tablets will incorporate elements and new capabilities based on feedback from the nearly 2 million children and families around the world who use the current XO laptop. The XO tablet, for example, will require approximately one watt of power to operate (compared to about 5 watts necessary for the current XO laptop). The XO tablet will also feature a multi-lingual soft keyboard with touch feedback, enabling it to serve millions more children who speak virtually any language anywhere in the world.
The device is also decidedly "constructionist" in nature. By design, it combines hardware and software to deliver a platform that will enable educators, students and families around the world to create their own content, and learn to read, write, and create their own education programs and share all of these experiences via a mesh network model. The device will also feature an application to directly access more than 2 million free books available across the Internet.
"While devices like eReaders and current tablets are terrific literary, media and entertainment platforms, they don't meet the needs of an educational model based on making things, versus just consuming them.
